In Episode II, Anakin summarizes this quite well. He wants a galaxy where people reach an agreement over what will be the best for everyone. But he adds, if they don't agree, "someone wise" should force them to do so. In other words: we need someone wise who knows what's the best for everyone and this person should have the power to force everyone else to comply with this person's decisions. And if this is dictatorship, "well, if it works..."
Yes, democracy is messy, because it's a system where decisions are made based on agreement, and no one can force others to agree with him. It requires genuine consensus and voluntary, genuine, freely formed cooperation. Which puts responsibility to every single individual. But this is the best we can get. When people cease to believe in cooperation, they don't want its messy parts, they trade it for compliance: they want a powerful, benevolent leader who will solve their issues, who will think for them and tell them what to do. They want their world to be good, but also simple.
And tyranny is supported by many people who believe, they know what's best for everyone, and those who oppose them, are unable to recognize this, or just simply "evil,"
and it might take brutal measures to broke down the resistance of the fools and the vile, but it's for the greater good.
