I recently got the all three art books for the prequel trilogy and decided I would like to share some of my favorite pieces as well as interesting concepts that didn't make it into the movies.
The Phantom Menace
This book has a lot of very interesting and beautiful art work as well as concepts. I'll start with my favorite and move onto pieces and info that y'all may find more interesting.
Padme
This is by far one of my favorite pieces from the book. I feel that it does a great job capturing the beauty, elegance, and kindness of the character.
The Sith
Before George Lucas and the team settled on Darth Maul they originally wanted to have a female sith.
For this design George told the artist to draw his worst nightmare (bottom left) but George deemed it to scary so he then told the artist to draw his second worst nightmare (larger image). This piece was clearly the inspiration for the Nightsisters that wouldn appear until nearly a decade later. On the right hou can see early art for a male Sith.
It wasn't until much later that they settled on Maul. I really like this peace because of his regal appearance as opposed to his later more savage appearance.
Interesting and Funny
In this book I found some interesting concepts and pretty funny artworks.
This is an early Nemoidian design that would later be further refined during work on Attack of the Clones into the Geonosions. It was designed after the battle droids and was made to match their head designe.
This is alternate Watto that I thought looked really funny, I kinda wish he looked like this in the movie.
Another interesting concept I found was the intention of having Obi-Wan be older and the master of Qui-Gon.
If any of you have this book as well I'd love to see what your favorite piece was as well as anything you found interesting.
