We’re now seven episodes in and so far, this season has not disappointed. We’ll be in for a real treat if this level of quality stays consistent. These two episodes have to be the most clone-centric, and that really means something coming from this particular series lol. I found both to be quite suspenseful all the way through. Both are solid 8/10s.Â
We get our best look at Rex’s network and the work they’ve done thus far. It’s nice to see Senator Chuchi again, as well as Avi Singh as this season has been picking up on threads introduced back in season 1. Unfortunately, we know that the work Rex has conducted will eventually fall apart and these episodes do contribute to that. The network takes heavy losses in the form of Fireball, Nemec, and several other clones. Granite, these are really background characters at best, but as a massive fan of the clones, it is a punch to the gut to watch them go, especially when it was all done by just one assassin.Â
We finally get the return of Wolffe. I did like seeing a force consisting of both clones and Stormtroopers as this should still be a transitional period, rather than just Stormtroopers abruptly showing up out of the blue. I imagine his whole demeanor and rather neutral stance towards Imperial servitude is how most clone commanders and other officers behave. His standoff with Rex and the Batch was my favorite moment. However, I can honestly understand why it wouldn’t mean a whole lot to some fans seeing as there wasn’t a lot of buildup and this was Wolffe’s first appearance in the series. Personally, I’m glad he didn’t just defect right then and there, and will join up with Rex only after he truly discovers the Empire’s disregard for clones. I just wish the one clone commando beside him was one of the Deltas.Â
It’s no surprise that Crosshair continues to be the best character. I still don’t think all is well with him and Hunter just yet, but they do have each other’s backs now when needed. I wasn’t actually expecting any sort of beef with Howzer, but it makes sense. Eventually, there was a mutual understanding between the two when the latter had come to see how he had changed, primarily in his interactions with Omega. Crosshair then going up face to face with the very assassin he could’ve been and was likely the template for was yet another standout.Â
I’m glad these episodes finally gave some answers to the clone assassins. In addition to sampling the blood of imprisoned clones, the Empire reconditions others into highly skilled assassins that appear to be modeled off of Crosshair. With the fact that Crosshair knew exactly what they were and how hesitant he was to disclose any information on them, I imagine we’ll see just how they’re brutally reconditioned, beyond what was briefly shown with Crosshair himself last season. This particular assassin has more gear than the standard, was a dangerous threat for two episodes, survived a fall, and remained helmeted the whole time. They’re definitely an already established clone and my money is on Cody. I know others have theorized it to be Tech, but that would just take away from the character’s sacrifice. Cody conspicuously went awol and as a marshal commander, would be an ideal candidate for reconditioning.Â
