For many fans of Knights of the Old Republic the prospect of a third game is an exciting one. Unfortunately, as the years go by the chances seem less and less especially once The Old Republic MMO eventually shuts it's servers for good. That being said the best we have for the moment is Drew Karpyshn's 2011 book which acts as a sequel to both KOTOR and KOTOR II. I wanted to discuss some of the elements of the book and see what the Fandom thinks about it.
The book for me is much more of a true sequel to KOTOR, given the main focus on Revan and the elements that tied in more directly with that game. The inclusion of the Jedi Exile is interesting but never seemed to be as well thought out or as heavily linked with KOTOR II. Any references to the sequel are minor at best (Minus a decent cameo from Atris), the wiki lists an indirect reference to Bao-Dur but I've never been able to find it myself. Her death is a point of contention though I've grown used to it.
The Sith Empire is fascinating. Whilst undeniably different from the idea of the "True Sith" as established by Obsidian Entertainment. They are still an interesting concept nevertheless. Some of my favourite parts of the Novel take place on Rekkiad and Nathema. Scourge is an exploration of an underling caught up in the conspiracies and the power politics of an Empire fuelled by the Dark Side. Darth Nyriss is a good antagonist though ultimately no match for the power of Revan. The Emperor I've always been mixed about. I'm not sure what it is but he feels off. Like he was never meant to exist. It's a strange disconnect considering what a large role he'd play in later stories.
Overall, I'd consider the book mixed in some areas but overall a decent novel. It ties in nicely with some elements from both games and despite the disappointment of not having a true KOTOR II, I still believe the book is as best as we will get. If it was created in a video game format and not a tie in novel then perhaps it's reputation would be greater. Books are more definitive with a set outcome. What are your thoughts on The Old Republic: Revan?
