Happy LGBTQIA+ History Month, Wookieepedians! As we journey through the vast and diverse galaxy of Star Wars, it's essential to recognize and celebrate the rich tapestry of characters who represent various facets of the LGBTQIA+ community. To celebrate the month alongside Fandom, let's shine a light on a handful of characters from the Star Wars universe who remind us that love and identity transcend star systems and species.
Sinjir Rath Velus
A character first introduced to us in the Aftermath trilogy, Sinjir Rath Velus was a former Imperial loyalty officer turned New Republic operative. His character development and journey serve as a testament to the power of self-acceptance and the possibility of change, even in the face of adversity.
His relationship with his boyfriend, the slicer Conder Kyl, was one of the first depicted in the new Star Wars canon, adding a bit of flavor to his life outside of work. Over the years, most of the (many) alcoholic beverages Sinjir chooses to imbibe have had their Wookieepedia pages completed!
Losha Tarkon and T'onga
Hailing from the Star Wars: Bounty Hunters comic series, T'onga and Losha Tarkon first met in a Varkana cantina and eventually got married. The wives lived together on the Moon of Logal Ri as farmers for some time before eventually going on adventures together.
Larma D'Acy
Larma D'Acy was a Resistance commander married to the pilot Wrobie Tyce. The wives both fought with the Resistance until the Battle of Exegol, sharing a kiss to celebrate their victory against the First Order. Their shared stories are further expanded upon in the supplementary novels that expound on events from The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
Conclusion
Though not every character could be highlighted in one post, it's fun to look in-depth to a few from different time periods. On Wookieepedia, more LGBTQIA+ characters can be read about here! A glimpse at more characters and their impact on the franchise can be found in the Pride Month post from earlier this year, including several like Chelli Lona Aphra, Sister, Tam Posla, Vel Sartha, Cinta Kaz, and several others.
There's also still copies of the Pride Month variant covers from earlier this year in many comic stores to pick up if not already acquired!
In celebrating LGBTQIA+ History Month within the Star Wars universe, we honor the diverse and inclusive values that make the galaxy far, far away an ever-evolving and enriching tapestry. These stories can help remind us that our identities, our experiences, and our capacity to love have a place in even the most expansive of worlds. Let's continue to embrace and uplift the stories of characters and Star Wars creators year-round, ensuring that Star Wars remains a welcoming and inclusive space for all fans.
May the Force be with you!
