The EU Star Wars Republic comics consists of an overarching story about Quinlan being inserted into Dooku’s Dark Jedi cult as a spy. Quinlan has always struggled with the dark side for most of his tenure as a Jedi and his flirtation with the dark side became even worse as the Clone Wars erupted. Quinlan did his best work behind the scenes like establishing a spy network to learn about the activities and motivations of the separatists. Quinlan’s underground activities eventually raised suspicion that he’s succumbing to the dark side. Agen Kolar was sent to arrest Quinlan by order of the council. They had a pretty interesting conversation about the ethics of the Republic they serve which further convinced Kolar that Quinlan needed to be brought before the council to determine if he’s truly going dark.
Quinlan was able to escape capture and Kolar reported to the council that his mission was to failure. Unbeknownst to him, and most of the Jedi for that matter, Quinlan’s master Tholme along with members of the Jedi council orchestrated Kolar’s mission to establish Quinlan as a rogue Jedi. With the statement of a respected Jedi confirming Quinlan has betrayed the Republic, Quinlan has all the credibility he needs to infiltrate the separatists. Even though this is a plan the Jedi council hatched, they had great reservations of sending Quinlan into the lions den especially if that meant he would be within Dooku’s inner circle. Quinlan’s dark side tendencies and reservations about the Republic made him a viable candidate for deceiving Dooku into thinking that Quinlan has truly defected but there’s a danger that he could truly become what he would pretend to be.
My question for you guys, if you were a member of the Jedi council, what would you do? Would you be in favor of sending Quinlan to infiltrate Dooku and the separatists knowing that he’s already struggling with the dark side? Do you think the rewards are worth the risks?
I’m personally on the fence about whether or not I would be in favor of this risk. Quinlan’s dark side struggles could mean that Dooku could legitimately turn him especially since Dooku’s selling point for joining his Dark Jedi cult is finding an alternative path to serving a Republic you no longer believe in. On the other hand, there’s so much about the Clone Wars and the separatists plot that is unknown to the council. Quinlan himself was determined to be successful in infiltrating Dooku’s cult so he could discover the identity of the second Sith. Knowledgeable of obvious future ROTS events aside, this feels like knowledge that would prove instrumental in ending the clone wars that much quicker.
