^ I take the exact same view point on this.
MGLT standing for "Megalight" is a fabrication that doesn't need to exist per the rules of Star Wars which already has FTL travel.
And the worst part is that it has been mentioned several times that when in realspace, people travel at sublight speeds.
Like... what.
I personally believe the reason this borderline mistake of a measurement got so out of hand is because at one point someone used "parsec" in a canon novel, to measure an intrasystem distance.
Even though a parsec is literally over 3 lightyears long.
^Thats another thing - is a parsec a unit of time or distance? in some cases its used as distance like what you said but in others its time.
??????????
Nope. Never time. Always distance. Those who are saying it as a measurement of time don’t know what they are talking about.
A parsec is only used for distance, it's approximately 3.2 light-years long, (A light year is also a unit of distance, the length light travels in a year.) If you give me an example of a time where it looks like someone is using a parsec as a unit of time, maybe I can help clear up your confusion
^ I mean Han does it in ANH
But the original intention of that line was that Han was trying to con Obi-Wan and Luke
Obi-Wan sees through it but then the fandom ran with it and came up with an in-universe explanation
Can you share the quote you're talking about, Red?
Red is talking about when Han says that the Falcon made the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs (to Kenobi in the cantina). It’s highly likely, if not already confirmed, that that was a writer’s mistake believing that parsecs were a measure of time.
^I'm 99% sure that line was just supposed to illustrate that Han is a blowhard who doesn't know what he's talking about, but the audience didn't pick up on it to such a degree that there had to be an "explanation" for the line. Alec Guinness's reaction to that line in particular leads me to believe that Han originally was simply supposed to be wrong in-universe.
^ I remember reading that the script literally mentions exactly that
But this being an esoteric scientific term that could conceivably by misconstrued as a value for time...
(Which, to be fair, seemed to be what Han was banking on)
Oh, I understand! What he meant was that he got from Kessel to Oba Diah by traveling slightly more than 12 parsecs of distance, whereas everyone else in history had taken the winding, 20-parsec route through the Akkadese Maelstrom. He took a dangerous shortcut that shaved off almost 8 parsecs of distance. See the map in the infobox of the Kessel Run article
I always knew that's what he meant, and Solo confirmed it. He wasn't mistakenly using it as a unit of time.
Also, sorry it took me so long to reply, I was out of town
What do you think?
