Nah, Room is right, they are pretty garbage. Bad dialogue, cringy acting. I mean I guess if you’re a kid seeing it for the first time and are fascinated by shiny things and lasers it seems good. Not a great experience if you see it for the first time as someone with more maturity like a young adult.
Also I’m shocked that someone could think that the PT music is anywhere close to the masterpieces in the OT. The PT produced a handful of good themes, but was mostly filler. In the OT pretty much every number is best in class.
Mind you my pov is coming from someone who watched TOM and AOTC for the first time ever literally a week ago. And I understand where your nostalgia bias comes from considering I love TFA for the exact same reason. But I mean nothing about the first two films in the PT I enjoyed, at all.
I love them. Maybe even my favourite trilogy.
Yes, the dialogue is very cringe. Yes, ATOC romance scenes were bad. But the duels, characters, music, VFX, story, MEMES - and let us not forget the LORE. SW wouldn't be the same without the PT for everything to hinge off from. Both Clone Wars, countless books and comics, a bunch of games, none of it would exist for our own enjoyment if it wasn't for the PT.
Even if you don't like the movies, you can't deny the IMPACT they've had on SW as we know it. Also the memes. Did I mention the memes?
The prequels are easily the worst IMO. everyone hates the sequels but i think theyre much better than the prequels (and very overhated). the originals are the best ofc
I think for me the biggest issue I have with the PT isn’t the cringe dialogue and acting. It’s the very obvious absence of Marcia Lucas. I believe that George had amazing ideas with the PT (which is made obvious because TCW is absolutely incredible) but he had no idea how to implement them into a film while making it coherent.
^^^There was significant and high quality lore BEFORE the prequels. The expanded universe far predates the prequels, and felt much more consistent with the OT universe that George originally created.
Of course
I know there a re flaws about the trilogy but I have to say the Prequel Trilogy is enjoyable
I like only ROTS, but AOTC introduced us to Dooku, Jango and the Clones.
The PT is widely regarded to be the best storytelling because the story is copied from real life.
Politician uses civil war to destabilise Republic and get voted in. Then grabs increasingly dictator-like emergency powers to deal with said war. Eventually he has so much power he becomes a total dictator, gets rid of the Senate and ends the Republic to form the Empire. Palps or Julius Caesar?
The more interesting story is the abusive relationship Padme was in but that is a retcon. It was meant to be awkward youngsters.
So what's left to pour praise on? Memes? Forget that, it is no way to judge a film.
^Memes are not a good criterion to judge a movie, I agree. But I personally loved all the Prequel-movies unironically from the first time I've watched them, without being biased by supplementary material like TCW or memes or material I didn't like in comparison to them.
I personally love the Prequels mainly because of the story they tell. Anakin's fall to the dark side is something that always resonated with me - the story of a man who started out as a well-meaning kid, determined to do good, but succumbs to his greatest flaws to the point where he turns on everything he once swore to protect. Anakin's story always fascinated me because it's basically the story of somebody making constantly the wrong decision. It makes Anakin very human and (in some aspects to some degree, not in every aspect) somewhat relatable.
Besides Anakin's arc, I also enjoyed a lot of other characters - Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Padme, Yoda, Mace, etc. The Prequels also have a lot of fascinating antagonists, in my opinion. My personal favorites would be Maul, Jango Fett, and Palpatine. Sure, the former two weren't given all that much background etc. (although I don't think that was really necessary in their cases, anyway) but they have creative designs, came off as intimidating and powerful, and presented great challenges to the protagonists. And I loved Palpatine in the Prequels. He was such a cunning antagonist, manipulating everybody around him while still pretending to be a harmless, well-meaning, elderly man.
While the dialogue may have been bad overall (though I personally think not all of it is all that bad), there are a lot of great action scenes. I loved the lightsaber duels in the Prequels, or generally fight scenes or even non-fight scenes like the podrace in TPM.
The PT also has some of my favorite SW-soundtracks: Duel of the Fates; Across the Stars; I'm Sorry; Anakin's Dark Deeds/Anakin's Betrayal; Battle of Heroes; The Immolation Scene, ...
I also liked a lot of the scenery, the designs of the different planets and species as well as costumes.
Sure, the Prequels are flawed. The romance part wasn't well developed, the dialogue wasn't very well written in many parts, and apparently, the acting wasn't very well divered either in some parts (though the latter is not something I personally ever really noticed). But a lot of Prequel-haters pretend like those are the only things those movies have to offer. Claiming that Prequel-fans only like these movies because they are "blinded by nostalgia" or only like them because of the memes resulting from those movies often seems like an unfair, dishonest argument. I for one find plenty of enjoyable aspects in those movies to like them - despite their flaws
What do you think?
