I get that he's meant to be hated by the viewers, as an antagonist who defines the terms "Toxic", "Petty", "Irresponsible" and "Immature". Someone who Kazuda would be like if he were a bad guy.
But I think he deserved more fleshing out. His role is pretty much this:
Supposed "new friend" of main protagonist who turns out to be evil and foolish.
Blames the protagonist for his own screw-ups and spends the rest of the first season trying (and failing with flying colours) to get revenge.
Is just all of a sudden, whisked off to join the bad guys as a full-fledged villain with no explanation or depth as to how he ended up this way.
Serves as a foil to female protagonist over decisions and conflicting loyalty.
Becomes a mere pawn for protagonists by being framed for "betrayal" and taken to be executed.
Turns down a chance for redemption, is left for dead and just dies, forgotten and non-existent. Effectively a victim of his own pride, hate, cowardice and narrow-mindedness. Even his own 2 crew members, he seems to have forgotten himself.
I get Resistance only lasted 2 seasons, but should Rucklin have been fleshed out more? Like, who are his folks? How did he gain his "friends"? Why is he such a foolish jerk? How did he become a First Order Pilot? Why did he refuse a chance at changing? How did he become part of the Colossus?
I wish we could have known. He'd have been the perfect evil counterpart to Kaz.
