Do you guys think A New Hope would still have been a great movie if it was released in 2022 instead of 1977?

It probably wouldn't have been as big a success as it is. Star Wars was doubtlessly one of the major contributors to the blockbuster era but it wasn't the only one. Which means it very well could have been released into a similar media ecosystem to the one we have now. In today's zeitgeist the relatively slow pace (by the standards of a modern blockbuster) would have hurt it's performance with a general audience. That being said it still likely would have the potential to attract a cult audience akin to how BSG or Babylon 5 are treated now.
Hard to tell, but the CGI would be much better.
I hope it would be better than it was back then…im glad Star Wars endures for the masses…but great movie it was not
As long as the film could leverage 2022 movie making innovations and technology and budget, then yes, it would be a great film if rereleased today.
It is plain to see that ANH suffers a great deal from lack of modern digital innovations to improve the look.
I doubt it would be as great as it was back in the 70’s. If made under today’s standards the movie would suffer from the modern day wokeness (issues related to social justice and indentity politics), which is apparent in almost every film that Hollywood produces. The film would not be about a genuine story, but rather about a "checklist" – whether there are enough minority people represented, equality among genders etc. Because if not, you wouldn’t be able to produce it (it wouldn’t be financed). I wish I would be making this up, but that’s the reality of modern day film making.
Other than that, I doubt we would even get a Luke Skywalker character, because he was created by George Lucas, but since Lucasfilm now belongs to Disney, there would definitely be a different protagonist and who knows – maybe even a different storyline as well.
They'd probably make the Princess a strong, independent and inspirational leader who can fight for herself. Or something woke like that. Have her fighting for a liberal democracy alongside a diverse coalition of freedom fighters against an obvious fascist analogue. Or some other political correctness.
Or just common sense, for those who don't read your sarcasm. When was the last time a movie actually failed for being "woke" or something? It's a label people slap on everything without actually understanding, and Hollywood steamrolls on.
The cultural background is another wrench in the question. If Star Wars defined the modern blockbuster when it first premiered, would the modern blockbuster have evolved without Star Wars? I really don't know if Star Wars still be unique today on its own without the cultural context it started.
If it were released today, ANH would still be a good enough movie, but nothing close to the effect it had back in ‘77. The main reason it was such a hit, as has already been mentioned, is because it was so ahead of its time — the special effects, graphics and visuals, along with the storyline and dialogue, we’re something largely unseen, unheard of, and nonexistent up to that day.
Disney would have to implement something new, something innovative, to make it a success today.
I think it would be fun
Now as for the actors I know that everyone would be re-casted with todays actors
The technology for the movie would be way updated
Not sure if George Lucas would have directed it if it was released today
But I think it would have been a popular movie and a major success
What do you think?
