I say The Last Jedi was a good movie
I didn't mind it, and I know that it has problems, but I was okay with it
Even after 5 years, a post about this movie always delivers. As someone who comments positively about the sequels on this forum, this was my least favorite of the trilogy. There is plenty I enjoy when I watch it, but the reasons it is my least favorite is not because I think the movie is bad, it’s because its primary themes simply didn’t resonate with me.
I didn’t think the movie’s “meta” approach to SW was all that tantalizing. The movie is praised for its deconstruction of SW, but I never saw a need for SW to be deconstructed, nor think that simply deconstructing any major franchise at all automatically makes something great. Frankly, deconstructing something like SW is the easy part, and I think that makes it somewhat of a cope out. What the hard part is, is the “reconstruction”. And, this movie didn’t attempt to do this in any significant way, nor did the director seem to have anything in mind either.
After over 2 years on this forum, I have never come across any analysis or in-depth discussion about Canto Bight, a significant portion of the movie. I think the answer is clear - it is a largely forgettable sequence (it is my least favorite in all of SW, I’ll take the worst of the prequel trilogy over this any day). But, I realize Canto Bight was not written for me. I mean a SW film lecturing me about how rich people are terrible and the modern military industrial complex was largely yawn-inducing, if not disappointing.
But, the worst offender of the movie for me was not Luke or even Holdo, but that Rey was made a “nobody”. This, I simply did not like. It was sold as novel and refreshing, and was nothing of the sort. It turned Rey into a generic superhero, a person with crazy powers with no in-world purpose in the story except to act as an audience self-insert for perceived self-empowerment.
The praise that being a “nobody” garnered was based on made-up, fan-made fallacies. For one, SW is littered with “nobodies”. This is not something new, just look at Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Yoda, Ezra Bridger, and any other of the thousands of Jedi who are all “nobodies”. Second, showing that “the Force is not just for powerful bloodines”, thus “democratizing” the Force, is also a fan-made fallacy. This is simply not true, besides “powerful bloodlines” itself being a shifting baseline whose importance depends on how/when a story develops. Starting from the OT, the Force has always been for everyone, for different individuals to experience it in different ways. It has never been confined to “powerful bloodines”.
The movie doubles-down on the “nobody” theme using Kyo as a pawn for audience messaging. He tells Rey that she is a “nobody”. But why would Rey’s character care? She doesn’t. She only wants to know who her parents are (and see them). Why would she care if they are “nobodies”? She is from Jakku. Of course they would be nobodies. Right, only the audience cares. Then Kylo says “You have no part in this story”. What story? Why would Rey’s character care or know about any “story”? She wouldn’t, only the audience cares. The movie uses Kylo to make the audience care about a made-up need for the character to “not be part of something” so that they can feel emboldened. Sorry, I did not like this about the movie. (I have written several essays about why I like that Rey was a Palpatine in TROS, all in my bio. It saved the trilogy for me).
Luke in this movie didn’t really bother me. I just didn’t like the way he died alone using a Force Projection. It left me wondering if he even wanted to come back all, and just used a Force Projection because he thought that’s just what people needed. Again, another theme that didn’t appeal to me.
Even so, and after all that, I can still say that I can enjoy this movie. I even find myself defending it on the forum. Whatever, it’s all good.
Now I don't wanna be offensive to the fans of this movie, but TLJ was an absolute shitshow
TLJ is personally my least favorite SW-movie but I wouldn't call it a "terrible" or "bad" movie. There are things I like about this movie and there are things I don't like about it.
I enjoyed Kylo's arc in this movie, for example. I also liked seeing Leia use her powers on screen (that's something I never understood why fans have a problem with that scene). Further, I enjoyed Luke and Kylo's confrontation. And I also never had a problem with Rose (there were some parts where I thought she was acting weirdly, but for the most part, I liked her). And I've come to like Rey's development in this movie for the most part, too.
So, there are several elements of this movie I like. The reason it's my least favorite SW-movie is because it's the SW-movie I have the most issues with. I was personally never a fan of Luke's portrayal in TLJ (with the exception of him confronting Kylo and his death scene); I was also never really impressed with Snoke. The Cantino Bight-Scene always evoked a mere "meh" on my part. There are other things I disliked/still dislike about this movie but these are the main issues I have with it.
Though, all in all, I still wouldn't call it a "terrible" movie because it does have some interesting themes and it's still a quiet fun movie to watch. Overall, I'd rate this movie as "okay" (I might not do it justice with this rating regarding objective qualities in terms of movie-making but that's just based on my personal enjoyment)
I feel very mixed on Last Jedi. It’s far from the worst (that honor goes to Rise Of Skywalker) but I wouldn’t call it good. It did some things I liked, particularly with the characters of Rey, Kylo, and Luke. That being said, I hate that they turned Poe into a joke, Leia flying through space is ridiculous and kind of insensitive (considering Carrie Fisher died only a year prior) and the “twist” with Snoke was just last writing. I liked many new locations, and I actually didn’t mind Finn and Rose’s plot, so I think there’s a little more I like here than dislike. 6/10
Oh shoot I thought you meant the RETURN of the Jedi. It‘S trash
^Do I read that as TLJ is trash, or RotJ is trash?
^ It's kind of hard to tell, but I think they mean both
^^ The Last jedi
And I love Return of the Jedi btw
What do you think?
