Sometimes she's adorable and sometimes she's annoying.
Yes I do like her
The first half of the season she was a pleasant surprise, as I expected her to be a cringe fest from the beginning. But she had some solid development, learned from her mistakes, and served as a solid catalyst for the development of the bad batch members.
But I have several major issues with Omega. As Swatteam said, the second half of the show she regressed to the “wE hAvE tO hElP tHeM” line almost every episode, and every single time they caved to her. She became so utterly cringey, it felt like they threw all her development out the window so she could be some annoying moral compass. The producers forced Crosshair to break character to save Omega when she tried to save AZ, which in my opinion was the worst part of the whole show, and ruined an otherwise decent end to the first season.
In short, I loved Omega the first 8-9 episodes, but I’m disappointed by her character after that point. She remains interesting though, and I’m hyped for what we’re going to see in Season 2, so I’m optimistic that we’ll get the better version of Omega.
My favorite Omega moment was after they landed on Cut's planet and she was so entranced by dirt. It was a very sweet moment showcasing how she spent all her life in a lab on a dreary water planet and was thrilled by everything new she experienced.
But for sure her insistence on always helping people got tiring. I don't think she realizes how big the galaxy is and how many people actually need help.
^^ "so she could be some annoying moral compass" Yeah, that's what annoyed me about her sometimes, too. But I guess such an idealism, the need to help everybody, the belief that everybody can and should be helped, is fairly normal for a child. What bothers me more is that the actual adults of this team so often give into her pleading. It would be nice if Omega learnt in the next season that sometimes, help arrives too late, sometimes, one is just not able to help; it would be nice if she adopted a more realistic and sober worldview while not losing her willingness to help others.
So, on one hand, her insistence on helping others is a sweet and innocent feature; but it did get on my nerves after a while, as well. But since there will be a second season, there is still room for development
@SagaSeeker Given that the S2 trailer looks like a time jump, I suspect we'll be seeing a more mature version of her in S2. Also given she has armour & some level of combat training in the trailer, she's probably seen some violence/action now, which may have changed her idealistic view of the world. I hope she isn't fully grown up when we see her again though, I'd like to see some of her development on screen.
@Lord Lothcat I haven't seen the trailer but that sounds interesting. I share your hope that the time jump isn't too large, so we get to see more of Omega's development on screen, as you say. Her being given armour and training (and a bow as a weapon) is a good point, it does indeed seem to hint at her growing up and becoming more actively involved in the more brutal aspects of life
@SagaSeeker Sorry! I didn't mean to spoil it for you. I'm only presuming that there's a time jump from Omega's hair being a bit longer, but it's just as likely that it's a minor tweak in the animation style (eg. Anakin, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka having varying looks in TCW). From a symbolic point of view, her receiving armour (like the bow in S1) could be a hint at her taking up a larger role in more violent parts of CF99's work but that could just be me overthinking this 🤷
@Lord Lothcat I appreciate your considerateness but your comment wasn't really a problem. The trailer has already been released, so I guess it doesn't really count as spoiler anymore. I just don't tend to watch trailers about stuff I already know I'm going to watch anyway, because I like knowing as little as possible as long as I know the basics of what a show or movie is about. So, I wasn't planning on watching the trailer anyway (another reason for that being that some people just don't seem to have the talent to create a good trailer without actually spoilering, so, I tend to stay away from trailers of movies or shows I'm already interested in watching). So, although I do appreciate people not getting too detailed about recently released stuff, getting accidentally spoilered is on me for not watching trailers and being on the Internet at the same time, lol.
But to get back on topic, that's an interesting observation about Omega's haircut. There is probably indeed a time jump in-between both seasons but how considerable it is remains to be seen, I guess. I also like your interpretation about the armour and I don't think it's overthinking
Absolutely not, if she dies I'm hauling out the champagne, especially after the number of incidents she caused where she almost got everyone killed doing something really stupid.
I wish they'd stop shoving little kids into the soldiers' hands because it just makes it impossible for the soldiers to do their jobs. The show is almost unwatchable sometimes when Omega is making a total mess of it (though I love the bad batch series overall as I do most shows except for The Acolyte which doesn't even count).
What do you think?
