When I wanted to get into comics, myself, I first started on Charles Soule’s Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith series, namely, the first volume: Imperial Machine:
It’s my favorite comic series to this day and it really helped me understand Vader’s character. This series is a big reason why Anakin is my favorite character right now, but as others were saying, whatever characters/time period you are most interested in is a good way to start as well.

^Well for legends Thrawn we have the awesome Thrawn Trilogy comics written by Timothy Zahn.
