Hello there! This past Star Wars Day, I sat down and watched a 4.5-hour fan edit called "The Rogue Cut." Essentially, it combines Rogue One and A New Hope into one film. It also includes several deleted scenes and the reimagined SC 38 scene. It was a blast to watch and helped me see A New Hope in a totally new way. Since I gave a review of another Numeral Joker cut last year, I thought it appropriate to review this one as well.
The deleted scenes were a nice edition, showcasing Luke's desire to leave Tatooine and his friendship with Biggs. The transitions between the deleted scenes and the films were great and I especially commend the music fading. I had hoped the quality of the scenes would be on the same level as the movies, but it was just the normal rough film from 1977. However, I've seen people online working to restore them, so maybe the fan edit will be updated once the project is finished.
When you watch ANH directly after Rogue, your perspective on that iconic opening scene completely changes. Before, you wouldn't feel nearly as much tension because the context has not been established yet in the film, but when paired with Rogue, it becomes a desperate escape with extremely high stakes. The blaster fight between the rebels and the Empire on the Tantive truly feels like a last resort to save the rebellion. When they're defeated, it has so much more emotional weight because we just saw what they had to go through to get those plans.
All-in-all, it's a simple, well-made fan edit, and I have no doubt that I'll come back to it sooner or later. 10/10 for me! Although I can't post the link because fan edits are somewhat of a gray area legally, I'm sure you could find it with a small amount of research.
