I’ll preface this by stating the following: critiques of specific characters and writers is not a critique of the actor. The fact you have such great talent like Domhal Gleason and even his verisimilitude can’t make certain characters work tells you all you need to know.
Now, one thing that bugs me about Jar Jar Abrams and the dumpster fire that was episode VII, is you have Kylo Wren who, according to the story, wiped out all the Jedi trainees at Luke’s academy, getting almost outmatched by a Force sensitive with not even basic lightsaber training and zero force training.
Ill conceed the emotional release of incredible power, but unless Luke’s academy students were hopelessly inept, Kylo should have thrown Rey a fair beating. It’s just lazy script writing and more than a bit tedious to sit through. It could have been so much more with the talent they had. There wasn’t much to Rey’s backstory which is a travesty. A girl on a planet, force leads her to a quest to destroy the Sith. That’s it basically. A force sensitive we get very little backstory or solid character building.
Its as if they said “hey, let’s take a million different concepts that have nothing to do with anything and shoe horn it into a draft one of my interns wrote while using the head!” That’s how it feels. Yes, I understand that many people new to the universe have no idea about the EU, but this is basic. Even people who have no interest have pointed out how messy and convoluted the movie was. It’s old news but when we sit down to watch the saga, it still staggers the imagination. *Sighs*…know what, never mind. I’m not using anymore qualifiers for making potentially controversial posts.
