Assuming a droid- like R2- has had his restraining bolt removed. Do you suppose a droid might one day decide they don't believe in the cause their working for, and just decide to leave the Rebellion for the Empire, or vice versa?

Depends on how restrictive their programming is. But probably not because most owners and manufacturers don’t want their droids getting any ideas.
Although if a droid can “break free” of their programming maybe they could switch sides. There was an instance of this happening where a droid was hit in the head during battle and joined the Republic.
Definitely.
R2 defected from Naboo to Republic. Then from Republic to GAR. Then GAR to Jedi. Then jedi to Rebellion. Then Lars ownership back to Rebels. Then to New Republic. Then to Luke's Jedi Order. Then to Resistance. Then to Inter Milan. So maybe.
@Ctmeh But R2 was just passing between owners and obeying them. When Anakin butchered the Jedi, R2 must have been in the temple, cus' Anakin flew straight from the temple to Padme with R2 loaded into his fighter, and not once did he voice any objection to the slaughter. Then the moment he changed ownership to Antilles he started serving the Rebel alliance despite the fact he was working for the Republic/Empire a few scenes ago. In fact R2 might be the most two faced character in the whole franchise
Depends if the droid is an independent thinker.
So a battle droid probably wouldn’t unless he malfunctioned. If the droid was just as aware as humans are probably.
What do you think?
