Happy (belated) Mothers’ Day, and welcome back to Women of Star Wars! Of course I would do something for this, as there are so many underrated moms in SW. Today’s featured character is Morrigan Corde from the Legacy comic runs (thanks @Swatteam123 for recommending them to me), mother of Cade Skywalker and an Imperial agent/double agent. Hope you enjoy!
Summarized biography
Morrigan Corde was born sometime during the Legacy era, many years after the time of the OT. Before the Sith-Imperial war, she worked as an Imperial Intelligence agent and fell in love with Kol Skywalker (descendant of Luke Skywalker) on a mission. The two got married and had a son, Cade. However, Morrigan felt that she had a different path to follow and left her family to resume her Imperial career. After returning to Imperial Intelligence, she retired from the field and started living under a new identity, Nyna Calixte. As Calixte, she became head of Intelligence and gained the rank of Moff. During her time on the Imperial Council of Moffs, she had a daughter with fellow council member Rulf Yage before divorcing him. Her daughter Gunn hated her mother for not being around and entering an affair with another Imperial, Morlish Veed (Calixte hoped this would help her politically). When the One Sith (new Sith order ruled by Darth Krayt) approached the Empire sometime later, Calixte helped them gain control and undermine the Emperor Roan Fel in order to secure Veed’s appointment as new Emperor. She became suspicious of the Sith, though, and helped Fel escape by using a decoy. Later on in the war, she reactivated her identity as Morrigan Corde for a mission to find Cade, who was now a bounty hunter. She reunited with her son and eventually helped him escape from the Sith. Becoming Roan Fel’s spy, she fed information to the Empire-in-exile and played a key part in the defeat of Krayt and the end of the war. Before the final battle, she was exposed as the spy and wounded by her former lover Veed, who turned on her. However, she was healed by Cade with the help of his father’s Force ghost, who helped him forgive his mother. She was also eventually reunited with her daughter, during a battle over Taivas where she explained herself to Gunn and her former husband Yage. She also participated in the final battle at Coruscant, and allowed her son Cade to sacrifice himself by flying into the sun with the body of Krayt, who he’d defeated (in order to prevent Krayt from returning again). Giving him a hologram of their family, she said to tell his father that she would always love him. (Cade ended up surviving and both continued to live their lives.)
Why is she underrated?
Many people won’t know Morrigan Corde because she’s from a relatively “obscure” part of Legends. I was starting the comics to learn about Deliah Blue (another great character who I will feature in the next few weeks) and also became interested in Morrigan, because her being a kind of double agent with two different identities was so cool. I was looking for a special SW mom to feature for Mothers’ Day and didn’t want to pick someone too well-known, so Morrigan immediately came to mind (after a few days of stewing over it lol). By featuring her instead of someone like Hera, Padmé or Leia I hope to get more people interested in her character and the Legacy era in general. To me this is an underrated part of Legends that deserves more attention.
Weekly quotes
“I'm Morrigan Corde. Imperial agent. Like you, I've been assigned to find Skywalker. If you hadn't tried to kill me before, I could have told you that and saved us both the time and trouble.”
“I love you, Cade. And when you see Kol, tell him I will always love him,”
The first quote is from around the beginning of the storyline, and the second one is from the end (I loved Legacy-War, awesome ending)
How to learn more about her
Morrigan Corde/Nyna Calixte appears in the 2006 Legacy comic run, as well as the sequel Legacy-War. I still have about 11 of these left to read (I cheated and read LW before finishing the older ones so I could find out what happens to the characters) but I would definitely recommend them for fans of Legends and/or comics. The issues introduce so many great new heroes/heroines including Cade Skywalker, Deliah Blue, Jariah Syn, and more as well as expanding on the general lore and the Skywalker bloodline. They also have lots of awesome Sith like Darth Krayt, Darth Talon, and the other members of the One Sith. Something I like a lot about Legends is the expansion on the Empire and what happened after Endor, and these comics provide a lot of Imperial perspectives along with those of the main characters. Anyway, all of the Legacy comics are so cool and I’m going to have to find the 2013 run too.
Your opinion matters too!
