My theory is the flames are connected to the lava by the force, and when he got farther away, the bond between the lava and flames via force was broke, causing the flames to stop

All the clothing/hair was burnt away, volcanic setting so assume lack of abundant oxygen to sustain the flame, and surface layers of skin are drier.
