Qui Gon Jinn. He was an exemplary Jedi who followed the will of the force and knew when the council was wrong about something more often than not. On top of that he had an unwavering faith in Anakin’s future as a Jedi and the chosen one and I firmly believe that he would’ve been a better master for Anakin then Obi Wan ever was.

Windu deadass got backstabbed by someone he already didn't trust and had more than enough reason not to, if Anakin didn't betray him he literally would've ended 20 years of cruel dictatorship.

I say Qui-Gon with how much was resting on his shoulders, with his faith in the Chosen One and knowledge of the Whills. Windu's a fair contender since his death is the climactic start of a larger tragedy.

The other characters all go on their own terms. Much less to be sad about there.

Windu's not too tragic, given his arrogant, tradition-following, non-empathic personality.

^It's not about his personality goofy, it's what could've happened if his death didn't happen. If he didn't die he would've stopped 19 years worth of cruel ruling under Palpatine if he killed him.

I don't know if Qui-Gon could've prevented Anakin's fall even if he still lived because Palpatine had the sole purpose of turning him so I'm not sure, but the reason why Windu's death is so tragic is because of what could've been.

Mace is my choice. I found his death itself tragic enough (being betrayed and murdered in cold blood), and the consequences of his death are enormous (Palpatine being able to continue his cruel regime).

Qui-Gon's death is definitely tragic on its own as well but I think it's a stretch to say that he would have been able to keep Anakin from falling to the dark. Maybe he would have, maybe he wouldn't have. We just don't know. So, not sure if him surviving would have changed the outcome of ROTS.

Yoda basically died of old age, a peaceful death.

The others all sacrificed themselves in one way or the other which has a bittersweet touch but they died more in a noble than in a tragic way

Qui-Gon, seeing as 1) it started off Anakin's journey to the dark side and 2) It could've been avoided if Obi-Wan just destroyed the ray door things
