Hello there and welcome back to Women of Star Wars! This weekâs featured character is Satine Kryze, former duchess of Mandalore and sister to Bo-Katan Kryze (and love interest of our many-time popularity contest winner, Obi-Wan). Hope you enjoy!
Summarized biography
Satine Kryze was born on Kalevala into the Mandalorian Clan Kryze. She had a sister named Bo-Katan, and a nephew named Korkie who she was very close with. Satine was a strong believer in the ways of the New Mandalorians (pacifists) and started working with them when she was young to help create a constructive future for her people. However, her views put her at odds with Bo-Katan, who supported the Mandalorian peopleâs warrior past. Satine was crowned Duchess of Kalevala in 42 BBY, after a conflict between the New Mandalorians and the traditionalist warriors during which her father, the current ruler, was killed. She became a target for the traditionalists after that, and the Jedi Council sent Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi to help her. She and Obi-Wan developed a close relationship during the time they spent together during the war. Afterwards, Satine and the other pacifists sought to rebuild Mandalore. During the Clone Wars, the duchess tried to keep Mandalore peaceful and out of the war. Unfortunately, a group called Death Watch opposed her and her anti-war efforts, and committed many acts of terrorism. She was reunited with Obi-Wan during an assassination attempt by Death Watch, and they had several adventures together before parting. Later, Satine faced many more threats including corruption and eventually war when the former Sith Maul allied himself with Death Watch and formed the Shadow Collective, a criminal organization made up of many large crime groups from around the galaxy. Satine was dethroned and captured by the Shadow Collective when Maul took over Mandalore. Bo-Katan, who had been a loyal member of Death Watch until Maul killed its former leader Pre Vizsla, freed her with the help of Korkie and some other family members in order to get rid of Maul. Even though the mission turned out unsuccessfully and Satine was recaptured, she managed to get out a message to Obi-Wan asking for help. Obi-Wan came alone and freed Satine, but both of them were subdued and brought before Maul. To hurt Obi-Wan, Maul Force-choked Satine and then stabbed her with the Darksaber, killing her. She professed her love for Obi-Wan before dying, though he was eventually able to escape and Maul was defeated at the end of the Clone Wars.
Featured quote
âI remember a time when Jedi were not generals, but peacekeepers.â
This quote represents her personality very well, as well as her trademark pacifist views.
Bonus: Are we going to talk about her last words? That was such a sad scene especially when you see how it affected Obi-Wan, and to some extent Bo-Katan.
"Remember, my dear Obi-Wan, I loved you always . . . I always will."
How you can learn more about her
Satineâs only canon appearance is the TCW show, which is an absolute must-watch if you havenât seen it yet. She appears in most of the Mandalore arcs and has pretty good characterization, I love her personality and her relationship with Obi-Wan (one of my favorite couples).
She has a brief mention in the Kenobi Legends book during a really bittersweet line (Iâll let you read it for yourselves). I finished the book a few weeks ago to prep for the Obi-Wan show and itâs awesome, a great read for those who like to get into Legends material.
Your opinion matters too!
What are your own thoughts on Satine? Underrated or overrated? Like or dislike? Share anything you'd like to say about her in the comments.
Thanks for reading! Next week is Motherâs Day, so of course I will be featuring one of the many moms from our favorite galaxy far, far away (Iâm keeping it a secret as just a special momâs day thing). The current order for the weeks after that (as established last week) is this:
May 8: TBR (to be revealed)
May 15: Wutroow
May 22: Hera Syndulla
May 29: Padmé Amidala
June 5: Deliah Blue (I bumped her up a week since Iâve got about 35 Legacy comics to get through đ)
Feel free to drop any other suggestions you have in the comments, and Iâll update the list for next weekâs post! Have a great week and MTFBWY all.
