🥉 ESSAY CONTEST
Welcome to the first episode, or part, of a history of canon lightsabers. Here, I will list four lightsabers per episode and include a brief history, as well as my thoughts about them. Let's see how this goes.
These are in no particular order, as I can't quite list a favorite and will be added based upon random choice. I'll scroll through the personal lightsaber category and pick a canon lightsaber that catches my attention at the time.
Obi-Wan Kenobi's first lightsaber
From the short negotiations with the Trade Federation, this blue (and briefly orange) lightsaber was held by Obi-Wan Kenobi until its destruction in 32 BBY. It was a single-blade lightsaber with a hilt of alloy metal. It was used and destroyed in a duel with Darth Maul, having been kicked into a reactor shaft.
When I first saw Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, this was one of my favorite lightsabers. Still a classic, it holds up today as one of my favorite designs. There's a reason that Obi-Wan's created a replica of it, but we'll get to that.
This famous lightsaber is another favorite of mine and was created by Anakin Skywalker. Held by Anakin, as well as Luke Skywalker, Rey Skywalker and Ben Solo, among others, it was a single-blade blue lightsaber.
Broken in half at a point in its history, it was put back together and was eventually buried on Tatooine. It saw many major events that included the duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan on Mustafar, the duel between Luke and Darth Vader on Cloud City, as well as seeing the final destruction of Darth Sidious.
What can I say about this one? Many Star Wars fans know it. It's passed through many generations and was featured in seven Star Wars films. I feel like we haven't seen the end of this blade and that perhaps, a future Jedi will retrieve it from Tatooine.
This green single-blade lightsaber was used by Depa Billaba during the Clone Wars. She even once held it against Grievous in a duel, with both being wounded in the fight.
We don't know too much about this lightsaber, yet, but it'll be interesting to see if it features in more stories. It's interesting to have discovered that it was used to fight Grievous, so I'm curious as to what other events it has seen.
This single-blade green lightsaber was held by Qui-Gon Jinn and then later by Obi-Wan Kenobi. With an alloy metal hilt, this lightsaber saw Qui-Gon face Darth Maul in two separate encounters, losing his life in the second.
After being fatally wounded in the second duel, Obi-Wan took the blade and defeated Maul, tending to Qui-Gon during his final moments. Afterwards, Obi-Wan returned the lightsaber the Jedi Temple.
Another classic design to me, this lightsaber design featured many similarities to Obi-Wan's first lightsaber, as well as some resemblence to Depa Billaba's. Many of the prequel lightsaber designs are classic to me and this one is no exception.
I hope that you've enjoyed this first episode. I intend to make more, especially if people enjoy this. Let me know if I can add anything for the next time, or if there are any specific lightsabers that you favor.
Thank you for your time.
Also, feel free to start your own conversations. Your own essay, or analysis of various Star Wars topics could be a good entry in the Essay of the Week Contest. It's good to have thoughtful and meaningful conversation with fellow Star Wars fans and I invite you to join in.
