One half of the former paradise world of Kessel is dominated by spice mines. The opposite hemisphere, marked by forests and the estates of King Yaruba and the royal family, is separated from the mines.

Spice mining releases dangerous toxins. Kessoline poisons the water and produces noxious gas. While mining Kesselstone to get Kessel spice, these Kessoline is relesed to the atmosphere.

The Pyke Syndicate, also known as the Pyke Family, controls the mines. They turn the medicinal mineral known as Kessel spice(the one that Trace threw away) into a powerful narcotic drug, consumed on their own world Oba Diah and sold throughout the galaxy.
<Kessel Spice Mines>
The Pyke Syndicate's Kessel spice mines are overseen by Quay Tolsite, who maintains thugs to watch for smugglers (like Solo) trying to steal spice and other minerals. The Mining Guild also has some agents at the mines, cooperating with the Pykes. They all wear protective gears to shield them from the radiation and toxic gas.
Quay Tolsite also uses a large droid crew to run the mines. The labor is carried out by slaves provided by the Empire in exchange for minerals.
Many of the slaves include Wookies and Gigorans, which is known for it's strength and power. Others are mostly convicted criminals.
<Kessel Run>
The Kessel Run is a trade route passing through the Akkadese Maelstrom and the Si'Klaata Cluster, starting at the planet Kessel. The way is marked by beacons, mapping out the most stable path through the dangerous swirling debris. Venturing out this course means almost certain obliteration, whether by asteroids or gravity wells, or being eaten by Summa-Verminoth

In -Solo-, Han managed to fly the Millennium Falcon through a shortcut, completing the Kessel Run in a record 12 Parsecs.

Coaxium, also known as hyperfuel, was a rare form of hypermatter and type of expensive starship fuel mined on Kessel.
