I'm feeling mixed about this.

I can't be the only one who's seen the "decline" in the MoTW right? Like, it's no longer at the top of "trending" on the Wook for days on end.

A part of me thinks it's because of the lack of new "stuff" to meme on, which is why I treasure users like @Dark Lord of the Pith, who've, I think, embodies the spirit of the MoTW the best, considering his memes have a personal flair to them. His humour is easily recognisable and you know it's his meme when you see it.

However, I've also noticed an increase in much more generic memes, ones without that personal brand of humour attached to them, to the point where I wonder, "is it time for the contest to go? Have we reached a point in he contest when it's become no longer a thing of passion, but one of obligation - an obligation to win.

I know I keep harping on about the fall of the EoTW, but it saddens me to see that form of art loose it's sense of originality. I will accept some of that blame myself for the EoTW, I still feel pretty guilty knowing I contributed to the "uniformisation" of the EoTW, which is why my new pieces vary in topic as much as they do, I'm trying to break out of that shell. I fear a similar thing is happening to the MoTW, where the memes are losing their originality, when they're becoming ever more homogenised. Maybe it's time to let it all burn to ash. After all, it's ash that fertilizes best.

Maybe I'm being too pessimistic, but something here doesn't feel right. You can almost feel the lack of personality in a lot of the memes. Maybe we should go back to having only a few memes per person.

Sorry for the rant, I just wanted to get the thoughts off my chest.

^just because motw is in decline doesn't mean it should be eliminated. It has died down and resurged before, and it can again.

Thanks for the positive compliments, I am humbly honored.

My basic investment in MoTW these days is to encourage others to participate in it, by the only way I know how... leading by example. I post memes in order to encourage others to post. That mix of participants makes it fun for all. You know how good essayists (is that a word?) truly appreciate reading the essays of others? Similar concept in the meme domain!

Many may think I am insincere when I say this, but I truly am happy for anyone else who takes top honors.

That said, I recall the original purpose of MotW, or at least my perception of Givinname's original intent, which was to allow an outlet where Star Wars fans like me could post their humor without clogging up the main feed.

And there is the rub! If we get rid of MoTW for real, then I believe many will wind up posting more frequent meme threads on the main feed. Those who have a caustic opinion of MotW rarely consider the consequences to the SW discussions feed if the contest were truly eliminated... and it would be a consequence they may like even less!

Of course, I am happy with whatever outcome the mods pronounce on MoTW, since I already came to acceptance of that possibility the first time it was banned (even though it was a joke back then). I'll be happy either way, and can find an entertaining way to contribute to overall discussions regardless.

But I'd be lying if I did not say "the little boy in me" secretly hopes the MoTW continues, at least in some form.

^^motw really does serve an important purpose in the wook ecosystem by keeping the wild meme thread population in check. And unlike the old meme dumps, it's active. Especially with the system of new threads each week, new users can find it and put their memes there. It even has the side effect of encouraging making better memes instead of reposting the same old google memes, because we won't update what we've seen a million times already.
