I have not watched The Star Wars Holiday Special. It's been driven so far into the ground that George Lucas himself wanted it erased from history.
For those fortunate enough to have not experienced it either, there are several parodies and reviews out there to sum up just what makes this TV special so infamous. Basically, it's so out of place and ridiculous that even George Lucas (who barely had any involvement) makes fun of it.
That said, it's pretty clear now why Disney hasn't gone out of their way to claim any of the bootleg versions of the special out on the Internet—or so I thought.
While the original special is still out there in our hands, it's getting a reboot.
Interestingly enough, it's not a remake. It's an entirely new story set after the Skywalker Saga ends, following the same basic plot line of Life Day.
It's also in LEGO form, which is stylistically a perfect choice. It sets the tone of the episode and fully acknowledges how the past one failed. Take a gander at that promo image in the news article, with three of Obi-Wan fighting half of Maul. It's perfectly all-encompassing.
This is a brilliant move by Lucasfilm to both honor the old content, add a new twist, and serve the audience. I can't wait to see what fun this will be to watch on November 17. What say you?
