One of my longest-standing arguments in my head is of which Star Wars film is my favorite. And my debate has come to these two films: Rogue One and The Empire Strikes Back. And I can't find a way to pick one over the other. So here I'll list my ups and downs for both films. Here goes.
Why Rogue One is better
Rogue One hands-down has my all-time favorite battle in all of Star Wars with the Battle of Scarif. With both the space and ground battle, the visual treat that is Rogue One is made better, even after seeing the beautiful and distinct environments and battles made for Jedha and Eadu.
Rogue One also has one of my favorite characters of all time, Chirrut Imwe. His trust of the Force rivals even the Jedi's trust of it. His devotion to the rebel cause and his sacrifice at the end make me so sad and overjoyed at the same time. The quality of this character that I see so little of shocks me.
And finally, Rogue One has one of the best villains in all of Star Wars. Krennic is my favorite villain of the Disney Star Wars films. His story is one of the best in Star Wars. A man who had it all. The Death Star, the support of Palpatine, and so much more, taken away by one of his greatest enemies, Wilhuff Tarkin. The way Krennic completely loses control when Tarkin takes over the Death Star is heartbreaking for me to see, and I actually feel bad for him.
Also, the Vader hallway scene is fricking awesome, don't @ me.
Why The Empire Strikes Back is better
First off, the nostalgic power and iconic-ness of this film is unbelievable. Some of the most iconic moments and quotes in all of cinema where created in this movie. The ability to recognize this film from one line is incredible. This has become one of the most well-loved films of all time, taking the top of the current 2020 box office during its re-release. No doubt is the nostalgia level for this film off the charts for me and the rest of the world.
Second, The Empire Strikes Back has the original characters. Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, and several others make this movie so good and fun for everyone, including me. Leia and Han's banter while they fall in love is hilarious and cute at the same time, with their exchange before Han goes into carbonite taking the cake. And oh my god, Luke is awesome in this movie. Watching him learn the powers of the Force and training with Yoda was awe-inspiring for me. There is so much more I could mention, but we gotta keep going.
And finally, The Empire Strikes Back contains one of the best twists in cinema, the "I am your father" line. This line changed everything back in 1980. And this twist is what made countless other opportunities possible. This line gave us a reason to see Padme and Anakin's relationship in the prequels, which was one of the best parts of the story. But most important, this twist made Luke so insecure and depressed that so many people, including me, first watched Return of the Jedi thinking that Luke might give into his sadness and frustration at this twist and turn to the dark side at the end of the trilogy.
So there we have it. Which one do you guys think is better? Answer below. Feel free to share any opinions or ideas you have regarding these two excellent films.
