Yeeeessss! I'm thrilled that this dating system is finally canon! I've been using it for years and it would have sucked to get used to a new one

Interesting, I thought BBY and ABY were always Canon, since Pablo uses them when answering Canon questions.
This is an awesome thread. The contributions by Theymightbegeeks is just knocking it out of the park!
Theymightbegeeks, did you sign up here because of my tweet that included a link to this thread?

So, just to clarify what AV-6R7 said, should we now begin to convert everything regarding chronology in the canon?
For example, I'm a bit confused with the "List of books" article, since all the Legends books are dated in ABY/BBY but the Canon list at the bottom just has these vague numbers as a dating system. I've seen these before on listings for canon media, and they look like they start from TPM as their epoch, but I'm not familiar with this dating method. I'm guessing this is the current (or now previous) system people are referring to. So I would appreciate it if someone could clear that up for me, and if someone could clarify whether or not we can go ahead and change these to ABY/BBY like the Legends listings.
This is great news since I've been campaigning for Wookieepedia to adopt the BBY/ABY dating system for 2 years. Common sense has prevailed.
I'm so happy Pablo talked in depth about the dating system. Once again, I don't think anyone was demanding it be used in-universe (a silly idea unless chronicling the Skywalker saga specifically) but all fans can relate to using the original movie as a reference point. Sure they may not know what the abbreviations BBY/ABY stand for but if they're on Wookieepedia they're obviously researching and can quickly learn. ANH is literally the only reference point that fans of all levels can identify with.
ChristopherLeeGallant I signed up for a Wookieepedia account around 2 years ago (coincidentally to discuss why BBY/ABY should be used out-of-universe) but I was quickly shouted down so I haven't participated since then until I saw your tweet. Why do you ask?
it's not a galactic standard. how it is to be used on canon pages cannot be the same as it's in Legends.
it's one of many dating systems being used in-universe. it's also a tool for us to better understand the timeline of events in canon.
Pablo made reference to an actual galactic standard in the twitter conversation that Nickyflash posted.
And that in-universe galactic standard is referenced in the starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Commerce_Treaty_of_1647
I don't think we're disagreeing on anything are we?
no sir!
