Extended Plot
Sheldon is in class when his teacher starts to sneeze and Sheldon who has a bad germ phobia begins to pack up when his teacher asks where he is going saying he's gonna stay away from her since she's sick but the teacher says that he can't leave without a hall pass but when a couple of classmates start sneezing Sheldon leaves anyways. He gets sent to the principal's office and his parents are in the office talking to the principal with the principal telling them that Sheldon is going to get a few days of detention because he escaped classroom without hall pass. They begin to talk about how students used to be spanked by teachers and how those were the good old days. Outside of the office the principal's secretary starts to sneeze so Sheldon leaves and as he heads home, he goes through the school and realizes that a lot of people are sneezing too. George Cooper Sr., Mary Cooper, and Meemaw talk about Sheldon and how he has detention. Mary thinks it's unfair and Meemaw suggests they give Sheldon money so that he can pay for protection. Sheldon goes to Georgie and asks for advice on detention. George Cooper Jr. tells him that he's going to be in physical danger so stay close to the teacher. The next day, Sheldon goes to detention. He pays one of the students three dollars and tells him to share it amongst the others.
Mr Givens finally arrives and sees Sheldon there and asks why he's there and Sheldon explains he's in detention because he left the principals office because the office lady was sneezing and Mr Givens agrees that something is going around and that he feels a tickle in his throat and at that, Sheldon leaves but this time he gets suspended for a week. Mary, George, and Meemaw talk about Sheldon's germophobia and that they might need to take him to the doctor. The doctor tells him that getting the flu isn't the end of the world and Mary tells him that Sheldon is afraid to go to school because he is afraid to get germs. Sheldon asks the doctor how he doesn't get sick if he's around sick people all day and the doctor says he wears protection like gloves and a mask. At dinner that night, Sheldon eats his food while wearing latex gloves and a surgical mask. Later that night while Sheldon is sleeping Missy starts drawing on Sheldon's mask and when Sheldon wakes up Missy tells him he has a cough and Sheldon leaves to go sleep on the sofa and hears on the news about a new flu strain which makes him worry Mary hears him awake and tells him that not everything said on the news is true and they only say it to scare people, to calm him down she pulls him into a hug and begins to pray for him asking God to protect him and keep him healthy and Sheldon being an atheist says he doesn't believe in God but that that still felt good. After saying that Sheldon asks why Mary keeps smiling and Mary tells him to look at his mask and when Sheldon takes it off he finds Missy's drawing and annoyingly yells Missy's name
Because Sheldon is suspended he is given a list of chores and when Mary goes to find him to give him the list she finds he's locked himself in the garage and refuses to open the door so Mary lifts the garage door and finds that Sheldon has encased the entire place in plastic as a "real germ-proof hedge of protection" and is even dressed up as an astronaut in case of a breach. Mary, George, and Meemaw stand outside of the room trying to figure out how to get him out. While at school, Georgie uses Sheldon's suspension to his advantage telling the girls that Sheldon's sick just so that they'll feel sorry for him and give him comfort. Mary tries to get Sheldon to come out but he won't eventually getting frustrated she threatens to go inside and when that still doesn't work she breaks the seal and chases him around the garage trying to catch him and Meemaw watching outside is laughing hysterically at her attempts and after laughing Memaw takes a try and decides to bribe him with freshly baked cookies but it doesn't work so she reminds Sheldon that he's a Texan and that his ancestors aren't afraid of anything and that he has to step up to be a man and not be afraid. Sheldon grabs the cookies and goes outside as an impressed Mary is left in shock. The next day ironically, he wakes up with a cold and adult Sheldon as the narrator says the only silver lining is that his mom sings him Soft Kitty.
